National Council's review on Suicide and Mental Health Issues

The Social and Cultural Affairs Committee of the National Council held consultative meeting on Suicide and Mental Health Issues with officials from the Ministry of Health, today.

Led by the Officiating Director of the Department of Public Health, the team made a presentation on current situation and strategies for mental health and suicide prevention. The presentation covered mental health services in Bhutan, suicide prevention approaches, data on current situation, strategies and plans and key challenges which was then followed by an extensive discussion.

The issue was identified as an important national issue that needs to be reviewed during the National Council’s workshop on “Developing a Strategic Roadmap for the 3rd National Council (2018-2023) held in 2018. The suicide and mental health cases has increased over the years and the covid pandemic has further aggravated the situation. Findings with recommendations from the review will be presented to the 27thSession of the National Council.
