The Social and Cultural Affairs Committee takes consultation meeting on Suicide and Mental Health Issues to the East

Towards collecting regional balanced views and perspectives about the Suicide and Mental Health, the Social and Cultural Affairs Committee conducted consultation meetings in Trashigang Dzongkhag on 8th and 9th October.

The Committee met with the Dzongdag and relevant officials of Dzongkhag Administration, teachers and students of Trashigang Middle Secondary School, faculties and students of Sherubtse College and Khenpo of Kanglung Thubten Choekhorling Shedra. The committee also visited the VTOB After School Lifelong Learning Program at Rongthung READ Center, Trashigang and interacted with the students. This is a free community service by a team of VTOB volunteers from Sherubtse College.

Alcohol use was highlighted as  the main cause of mental health and suicide according to these stakeholders. The other factors contributing the the issue includes extra marital issues, social media exposure, relationship issues, peer pressure and academic pressure.

The dzongkhag considered combating suicide a priority issue and initiated various awareness programs for prevention. There are budgets allocated at Gewog levels to carry out the program. Kanglung Gewog has established an old age home and care shelter home in Rongthung.

In Sherubtse College, the Happiness and Well-being Centre looks after the mental well-being the students. The college today has three counselors who takes the dual role of a counselor as well as a Student Service Officer for almost 1600 students. Y-Peer is another unit in the college which caters to the students with such issues.

On the 10th October, the Committee met with the Woman Association in Trashiyangtse Dzongkhag which is a group of women volunteers supporting needy and vulnerable people especially women and children in the Dzongkhag.
