The Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock hereby notifies the public that the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak has been confirmed at Daragaon village in Loongsilsa Chiwog under Lhamozingkhag geog, Dagana Dzongkhag.
ASF is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs with a mortality rate
of up to 100%. The disease is spread through contacts between pigs (domestic or wild), contaminated pig products, feeding pigs with contaminated kitchen wastes, through movement of contaminated personnel and farm equipment. As of now, there is no vaccine or effective treatment available for and ASF causes catastrophic socio-economic consequences for the pig farming sector and also in the wild pig population.

The Ministry reiterates the reinforcement of containment measures including the ban on movement and sale of pig and pig products from the affected area put in place by the local authorities. Further, as repeatedly advocated, the pig farmers within the country are urged to heighten farm biosecurity and implement the following good husbandry practices:
1.Construct fence around pig farm;
2.Do not feed kitchen wastes containing pork and pork products to pigs;
3.Refrain from feeding uncooked swills or kitchen wastes and if fed, ensure kitchen wastes are properly cooked; Do not feed hotel wastes.
4.Avoid visitors on the farm;
5.use disinfectant foot dips at the entrance of the farm;
6.use a designated footwear at the farm;
7.Prevent domestic pigs from coming into contact with wild pigs;
8.Isolate sick pigs immediately;
9.Immediately report any illness or suspicious deaths in domestic or wild pigs to the nearest livestock centres or BFDA office or through toll-free numbers 1244 (DoL) or 1555 (BFDA), as mandated by Livestock legislation. The Ministry would like to also strictly remind the public that the ban on import of live pigs, pork and pork products into the country has been in effect since July27, 2022.
Despite repeated awareness programs and notifications advising the public to refrain from importing live pigs, pork and pork products into the country to prevent incursion of ASF, there have been incidences of non-adherence to the notifications issued. In the event of any violation of the import prohibitions by individuals, business entities or institutions, the offenders shall be subjected to a fine as per the existing laws (10 times the market value of the seized pork product calculated using the market rate of pork) including suspension of business licence. So far, BFDA has imposed a fine of nu. 1.834 M to individuals/business entities for the illegal import of live pigs and fresh pork.

Any person found not adhering to this notification shall be firmly dealt in
accordance with the relevant laws of the country. no compensation will be paid
to the pig farms that do not meet the biosecurity requirements in event of ASF outbreak hereafter.
Issued for information and strict compliance
