Bhutan, the land of Paradise is one of the most beautiful and safest places for tourists of all nationalities to visit. From Buddhist temples and fortress visits to delicious Bhutanese cuisine to trekking in the Himalayas- opportunities to experience and learn its history off-limit.
Indian, Bangladeshis, and Maldivian nationals are considered regional tourists and you don’t need a visa to visit Bhutan but you need to have Permit. You can obtain a Permit at your port of entry with your valid passport (minimum of 6 months validity). However, to make your visit smooth, the Online Permit System has been launched by the Department of Immigration, Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs and the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB). Regional tourists can apply for Online Permits through registered Bhutanese Tour operators and certified TCB hotels. Though this facility is optional, tourists who use this facility can obtain your permit clearances and route permit before your arrival like international tourists. However, regional tourists need to pay Nu. 1200 per person per night as Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) as per the Tourism Levy Act of Bhutan 2020
International travellers, who wish to visit Bhutan must obtain a visa clearance before the travel to Bhutan as there is no “on-arrival visa” in Bhutan. Here is precise information on How to Get a Tourist Visa in Bhutan.
To come to Bhutan, it’s a must that you will have to come through a tour company registered in Bhutan. Once you have chosen and contacted a tour company in Bhutan, getting a tourist visa is a fairly simple procedure.
The Tourism Council of Bhutan requires you to make all tour payments to them via your tour operator prior to your visit. For international tourists the SDF is USD 200-290 per night and visa fee of USD 40. Once you have made your payment, your tour operator will ask for a scanned copy of the photo page of your passport. Your tour operator will submit it online to TCB and they will get it approved within 72 working hours. Tourists are required to show their visa clearance letter at their point of entry and the visa will then be stamped into their passport. Note that your visa will be valid only till the exit date applied for your tour.
