Bhutan Telecom Limited and Tashi InfoComm Limited (Tashicell) are the only telecommunication and Internet Service Providers (ISP) in Bhutan.  Both these ISPs offer very similar data plans which includes mobile data plan, broadband, and leased lines for various types of customers. However, there are slight differences so we have come up with this comparative study to help you decide which ISP provides better data rates and also to guide you on which data plan might be the best for you.

Bhutan Telecom was launched on 1st July 2000 as fully state-owned whereas, Tashicell was officially launched on 6th April 2008. 

PREPAID MOBILE DATA RATES

The above table shows prepaid data plan charges by Bhutan Telecom and Tashicell. We have calculated how much data you get per 1 Ngultrum you spent (MB per 1 Nu) for each data package which gives us a very clear view of the data plans. 

The first thing you will notice is that both ISPs offer the same data quota for the same package price and it is very clear that the bigger the data plan the more the value for money. Nu. 19, 49, 99, 199, 299, 499, 699, and 999 data plans are offered by both the ISPs with the same data volume and validity.  They both follow the same strategy of offering more data volume per Nu if you avail their bigger data plan. For example, we only get 13.68421MB per Nu.1 when we recharge for Nu. 19 compared to 50 MB per Nu 1 when we recharge for Nu. 2999. The difference is a significant three times and more.

In addition, we can also see from the table that Bhutan Telecom offers more variation on data plans from low packages (29 and 39)  to the highest package 3999. Bhutan Telecom offers more MB per Nu. compared to Tashicell. for bigger data plans like 2499 and 2999. For these reasons it is evident Bhutan Telecom is the clear winner in terms of Data plans and their rates.

UNLIMITED LATE NIGHT

Both companies offer very similar packages for late night users. Bhutan Telecom and Tashicell have unlimited late-night plans where users can enjoy unlimited data plans from 1 am to 7 am for BT and 1 am to 6:59am. 

For a single day validity, BT offers at Nu. 55 whereas, Tashicell charges Nu. 57 for 1-day validity. Similar to the advantage of recharging bigger packages in the normal prepaid mobile data plans, they offer more validity at less price if we recharge higher packages of unlimited data at once. For instance, Bhutan Telecom offers 10 days validity for Nu. 255 which costs Nu. 25.5 per day validity and Tashicell offers 7 days validity at Nu. 207 which cost around Nu 29.57 per day validity. 

Again, in our books Bhutan Telecom is a winner, not by much but still a winner for charging 2 Nu less on daily rate and a minute longer than Tashicell.

LEASED LINE

Bhutan Telecom and Tashicell charge different prices for leased line services.  For all the bandwidths, Bhutan Telecom offers the service at cheaper rates than Tashicell.  The difference gets wider with an increase in the Bandwidth speed. As shown in the table, we can see that Bhutan Telecom is quite cheaper compared to Tashicell.

Bhutan Telecom has different packages for prepaid and postpaid broadband. The disadvantage with broadband is that it needs a physical wire connection to your home, which could cost you initially to purchase routers and telecommunication cables (if more than a certain distance) and lose out on portability. However, you gain the advantage of cheaper data rates compared to mobile data plans.  Nu 499 package in broadband gives you more than 11 MB per Nu compared to mobile data.

Tashicell currently doesn’t provide wired broadband services but it provides mobile broadband on different devices with attractive data bonuses for 6 months. The devices include MiFi, 4G LTE Router and 4G Wingle. However, the charge remains the same rate for mobile data plans since it is the same mobile sim that we use inside these devices. 

CONCLUSION
By now, we think it is more than clear which company provides better data plans. Bhutan Telecom is our unequivocal winner with their better data rates on mobile, leased line and late-night packages! Congratulations Bhutan Telecom!
