The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) has gained popularity in Bhutan since IELTS( International English Language Testing System) was  temporarily suspended in Bhutan due to COVID19. There are three types of TOEFL; TOEFL iBT test centre-based, TOEFL PBT (paper-based test), and TOEFL iBT home-based edition. From these, the TOEFL iBT test centre-based is widely accepted for enrolment and visa application purposes. In case, if you are wondering where you can take the TOEFL iBT centre-based,, there are two approved test centres in Bhutan as of now. One is RIM (Royal Institute of Management) and the other is Chhundu test centre. 

For those of you who want to register for TOEFL iBT but do not have the know-how. Here is the process:

You can register online through the official ETS TOEFL app

1. Download ETS.TOEFL App from play store  for android users while apple users can download from the app store. 
2. Click on Create an Account
3. Create username and password
4. Once you create the ETS TOEFL account,  you can see when a test seat is available by clicking on the Schedule a TOEFL Test arrow pointing towards the right. 
5. Then it will take you to the page where you need to type the location of the test centre. 
6. Type your location (For instance, Thimphu, Bhutan)
7. Select a two-month range in which you want to take a test from the Select 2-month Date Range
8. Then click the search button which is at the end
9. If there are seats available in a particular month, the date will be circled. However, if dates are already booked, they will be striked. 
10.  Click on the date on which you want to take the test
    The name of the test centre with location details will be displayed.
11.  Click on the showtime to select a time
12.  Then select time from a Select a test time to register
13.  Provide your details as asked by the application
14. TOEFL  allows credit card payment as the only payment method. So enter your credit card details
    In case you do not have a credit card at that moment, you can add the booking to the cart and you can pay later using someone else’s.
    The TOEFL registration fee is $190 which is equal to 14800 approximately in Bhutanese currency. 
15.  After completing all your payments, you will receive an email from ETS notifying you that Your  TOEFL Order is confirmed. 

Note: Your TOEFL score is valid for 2 years. You have to take another test if you need TOEFL score after two years. As of now, test seats are all booked till July in Bhutan .  Additionally, it is vital to know that you have to keep checking the ETS TOEFL app to see whether there are seats available or not as they do not send any notifications when new seats are announced. In our personal experience, we noticed that information about test seats are released during the night hours (1am- 5am of Bhutan’s Time) and if you really need to book a test seat, you have to check during such hours or atleast first thing in the morning.
