The Ministry of Agriculture & Forests would like to notify the general public that there are confirmed outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the neighboring states of India and for the first time, ASF has also been detected in stray pigs that were found scavenging along international border near the sewerage plant of Phuentsholing Thromde.

ASF is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs with up to 100% death rate causing serious economic and production losses. The disease is spread by live or dead pigs, domestic or wild, and pork and pork products. As of now, there is neither vaccine nor effective treatment available for ASF. However, the disease does not affect humans.

Therefore, in continuation to the ban imposed on the import of live pig, pork and pork products from India vide public notification no. BAFRA/MoAF/1-36/1232 dated 7th May 2020, the Ministry would like to notify that import ban on live pig, pork and pork products (fresh/frozen/dried) from India will stay in effect until further notice.

Further, the pig farmers within the country are urged to heighten farm biosecurity of their pig farms; ensure kitchen wastes are properly cooked before feeding to the pigs; prevent domestic pigs from coming into contact with wild pigs; and report any suspicious deaths to the nearest livestock centres or BAFRA office.

Livestock and BAFRA officials shall ensure that the above measures are strictly adhered to, by the relevant stakeholders. Any person found not adhering to this notification shall be firmly dealt with in accordance with the Livestock Act of Bhutan 2001.
