About Hear, Listen & Speak Program:

The World Health Organization estimates that more than 360 million people in the world have a hearing disability, with ear infections being the leading cause of the problem. Of these, 32 million affected by hearing disability are children under 15 years of age, especially from low and middle-income families in developing countries like India and Bangladesh.

Medtronic Labs leads the grassroot program, Shruti, to help community health workers reach the underserved patients for appropriate care. The initiative aims to address the key barriers of affordability, lack of proper diagnosis and timely treatment to prevent partial or complete deafness.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The goal of the three-year Hear, Listen, and Speak Program is to help the Kingdom of Bhutan establish the continuum of care required to address hearing loss and ear disorders for children 0-14 years of age.  It meets various government mandates to strengthen child health and education services in Bhutan and to reduce the impact of disability on the Bhutanese people’s quality of life.

This national program is designed to address the complete continuum of care from identification to treatment to habilitation. The program will build locally-based professional capacity and services in newborn hearing screening, hearing technology, and habilitation that are essential for Bhutanese children 0-6 years of age who are deaf or hard of hearing to have a chance to listen and talk and integrate into mainstream schools. The program also implements screening and ear and hearing care services for Bhutanese children 7-14 years of age with typical hearing to ensure they have healthy ears ongoing.

Through the delivery of technology, professional training, and family education, and the implementation of new services and community outreach initiatives, this Program will establish sustainable ear and hearing care for children 0-14 years of age in Bhutan, both now and into the future.
