The PhD in Climate Studies is a three year regular (six years for part time) program and is designed to produce work-ready professionals capable of assessing, finding options and delivering them for climate resilient development. The program is also tailored to conduct a cutting-edge and solution-oriented research in climate change in an interdisciplinary setting.
Our research focuses on climatic impacts, but not limited to, natural resources management such as forests, land, water and etcwithin the domain ofsocial, ecological, and economic contexts of Bhutan and develop a clear understanding of the debates around environmental change. We welcome candidates with degree from a recognized University preferably in agriculture, bio-sciences, environmental sciences, energy, forestry, and social sciences such as geography, or related fields.
The program is intended not only for fresh graduates but also for professionals from government, and non-governmental organizations including international agencies who are dealing with or interested in climate change and mitigation, climate change adaptation, sustainable development, and management.
Why Climate Studies?
It is a key element of embracing sustainable development through enhancement of climate resilient communities and creating sustainable livelihoods. Given the diverse biophysical and cultural setting in Bhutan and diverse social and political settings in the region, professionals are expected to have in-depth working knowledge of several interrelated sciences and skills to link policy and practice pertaining to the environmental change.
This program will enable graduates to:
- Collaborate and work with experts in the areas of climate change sciencefrom diverse sectors and link policy and practice with critical thinking.
- Carry out climate change induced impact assessment, and build scenarios based on the identification of predicted impacts linking to Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGS).
- Generate reliable and quality data on climate change impacts and recommend probable mitigation and adaptation measures.
- Conduct technology assessment and recommend ways to adopt relevant technology for impact reduction in the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
- Embrace low carbon development incorporating ecological, social and economic concepts leading to Sustainable development.
- Link with different developmental partners in the region for internships, research and collaboration and etc.
Eligibility
To be eligible for admission to the regular Doctoral degree program, an applicant must:
- have strong academic records (both undergraduate and graduate) and hold a bachelor’s degree, and a Master’s degree, preferably with a combination of course and thesis work, from a recognized University.
- English Proficiency Requirement:
- submit a brief outline of dissertation research proposal (5-10 pages) (see annexure I for refrences) including the required research facilities, if necessary.
- Two recommendation letters (preferably one from an academic supervisor and the other from an immediate supervisor from the last place of your employment, if employed).
Deadlines:The applications for admissionswill be accepted once and close on mid-night of July 18, 2021.

Annexure – I
Proposal writing format
- Title: Concise and informative
- Introduction/Background: Describe the broad foundations with sufficient evidence to your proposed research.
- Statement of the Problem: Write specifically addressing the gaps that need to be filled and variables to be considered.
- Research Questions/Research objectives: Clear objectives/Research questions including a description of the questions the research seeks to answer or the hypotheses to be tested.
- Rationale: The original contributions that the proposed research would make.
- Review of Literature: Literature review must include the range of theoretical/conceptual/methodological aspects that would be used to apply while conducting research.
- Methodology: Methodology chapter must indicate how the approach or method fits the overall research design linking research questions and/or hypotheses. Description of data collection must provide solid foundation to the approach that would be used. Explain how data analysis would be done stating specific statistical tools and techniques. In addition provide potential limitations and how the biasness if any can be addressed.
- Significance/ Implications: Provide the methodological and/or theoretical contribution you anticipated to make to existing knowledge in the relevant field of studies.
- Budget and time line: Specify how much funding would be required to complete your research.
- References: List all the relevant literature
