Did you know it would take years to solve the ‘dog problem’ in Bhutan but just a few minutes to help the dogs in the streets, one at a time? And if you do care for them and all the animals in need, did you know that there are other people like you who decided to act and that you can join them?

Like you, they want a small and happy dog population, which lives in harmony with people. Like you, they hurt for the sick puppies, the skinny mummy dog, the dog or horse who had a car accident and the injured pigeons. Like you, they often felt helpless or unable to act, overwhelmed and sad.

The Bhutan Animal Rescue & Care (BARC) team and our volunteers in Thimphu believe in compassion-in-action towards Gross Animal Happiness.  Over the past 25 years we have rescued thousands of animals: dogs, cats, macaque monkeys, cattle, horses, owls, birds, deers, etc.

To us there is no ‘dog problem’! Each dog has a personality and their own story, some may have a name, sometimes they are happy and lucky, but often their life is difficult and tragic. For us they are Puppy and Domchu, Nakou and Miksir, Katu, Norbu or Chaychay. They don’t know they are part of a ‘dog problem’, they are just hoping for love, care and happiness, like you.

Who are we?

The Bhutan Animal Rescue and Care (BARC) emerged over the past 25 years from a personal initiative of Marianne Guillet (also known as “Rochi Ama” or “Mother of Dogs”), a French architect and geographer turned veterinarian and Hendrik Visser, a Dutch civil engineer and sociologist. With increasing attention for animal welfare in Bhutan over the years, the number of animals in need of care kept growing and in June 2013 Marianne, Hendrik and their close friends and supporters established the BARC as a civil society organization in Bhutan [CSOA/PB-26]. But BARC can only help animals because of its thousands of supporters, who inform on injured and sick animals, who bring animals in need to the centre, who donate food and blankets, and who make financial donations to help us do more.
